The objective of the Abe Bailey Travel bursary is to broaden the views of young South Africans by enabling outstanding South African students /Junior Staff Members, who show exceptional Leadership Qualities and a Strong Service Ethic:

  • To effect greater understanding and co-operation among those with various language and cultural backgrounds;
  • To foster enterprise, commitment and effective participation in a common future;
  • To promote South African unity.


THE CONDITIONS OF THE AWARD ARE AS FOLLOWS::
Applicants must:

  • Be 3rd year students and above or staff at Junior/Associate Lecturer level
  • Be of South African nationality and have a valid South African passport (permanent residents and international students are not eligible to apply)
  • Be aged 25 or less at the start of the Tour
  • Have a good academic record 
  • Have been involved in leadership roles within the university, schools and/or community

 

PERIOD OF TOUR TO THE UK: For the 2024 year,  the travel bursary will be for the period 25th November to 18th December 2024


DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FROM APPLICANT: There is no formal application form. Applicants are required to submit the ALL of the following documentation via email to Jolindon.Petersen@mandela.ac.za and Terry.Adams@mandela.ac.za with each attachment/file clearly named (use underlined text in points below as guide for file names). The subject line of the email must be marked "ABE BAILEY TRAVEL BURSARY _(your name)".

  1. A personal letter of motivation as to why you are applying for the Travel Bursary to the UK in order to meet the objectives attached
  2. A current CV, detailing the following:
    • Full Names and address
    • Date of birth, ID Number and nationality
    • Schools attended, matriculation year and results
    • University degree(s)/diploma(s), courses and results
    • Extra-curricular activities at school and university
    • Social and community service.
    • Details of leadership roles in the community, at school and at university
  3. Two letters of reference, not older than 3 years reporting specifically on your character, leadership and personal qualities. The reference letter must address the suitability of the candidate to meet the Objectives of this travel bursary
  4. Copies of certified Identity document, and complete university academic record
  5. Copies of school & university merit/achievement certificates (limited to 5)
  6. Details of leadership roles in the community and at university
  7. Copy of a valid South African passportplease ensure that your passport will be valid for at least 6 months after the tour dates indicated above (or If you do not have a passport, please provide confirmation that application will be/has been lodged.)
  8. A Certified Copy of the Student’s Department of Health Vaccination Certificate.


Please note:

  • Short-listed applicants will be invited for a panel interview prior to the 7th June 2024 (interview date to be confirmed).
  • Late and Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
  • Correspondence will be limited to short-listed candidates only. If you have not been contacted by 31st May 2023, please accept that you have not made the short-list.
