Facilitator: Dr Chantelle Clohessy completed her BSc (Mathematical Statistics and Physics), BSc Hons (Mathematical Statistics), MSc (Mathematical Statistics) and PhD (Mathematical Statistics) at Nelson Mandela University. Her research focus is on renewable applications and statistical techniques used to assess these applications. She has been a senior lecturer in the Department of Statistics at Nelson Mandela University for nearly a decade.

Target Group: Postgraduate students

Background: The main aim of this workshop is to get participants comfortable working with R. The workshop is aimed at students who want to learn R and how to perform basic descriptive statistics using this software. The course will start with learning the basics in base R and R Commander. Handling of raw data and the assessment of this data will also be discussed and performed using R. The session will also include performing basic descriptive statistics within this package, creating graphical illustrations and numerical statistics.

The following topics will be covered:

  • Organising qualitative and quantitative data, including generating graphs
  • Measures of location (mean, media, mode)
  • Measures of dispersions (range, variance and standard deviation)
  • Measures of relative standard deviation (percentiles, quartiles box-whisker plot)

This workshop is funded by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) through the University Capacity Development Grant (UCDG)
