Facilitators: Prof Jenny Clarence-Fincham is currently working on the George Campus, focusing on Professional staff development in the LT Collab. She brings extensive teaching and facilitation experience in Higher Education, particularly with regard to Learning and Teaching, where she has played a significant role in a range of developmental projects. Previously, she served as the Deputy Dean of Humanities at the University of KwaZulu-Natal before moving to the University of Johannesburg as the Director of Academic Development and Support. Her research interests include curriculum development, the development of inclusive assessment practices and the development of postgraduate supervision practices. Prof Vaughn John (PhD) is a professor in the School of Education, University of KwaZulu-Natal. He is an NRF-rated scholar with extensive experience of supervising postgraduate research and leading research projects.

 

Target Group: Both novice and experienced supervisors who want to improve the supervision process with their students.

 

Background: The Strengthening Postgraduate Supervision course has now been offered more than 70 times to academics at 25 universities in five countries. The online version of the course builds on the expertise and innovation of the highly acclaimed blended version to offer an interactive, accredited course.

 

The course has four major themes: Social Justice in Supervision; The Importance of Scholarship; Supervisor Practices and Supervision Processes

  • Lively forums with engaged facilitator feedback
  • A wealth of additional materials
  • Materials licensed under creative commons for future use
  • Assessed, moderated and accredited through Rhodes University
