Facilitator: Ms Selene Delport is the Postgraduate Workshop Coordinator at Stellenbosch University’s Writing Lab. Since 2009, Ms Delport has been presenting writing skills workshops for postgraduate students who are writing their theses and dissertations. She has also developed several other workshops for postgraduate students, including courses on research proposals, academic articles, and argumentation.

Target Group: Emerging researchers, Masters and Doctoral Candidates

Background: The workshop in Writing Skills for Academic Articles provides postgraduate students and staff with the opportunity to refine their academic writing skills in an interactive, practical way and to receive answers about academic writing in general. Various topics about writing research articles will be discussed, such as creating external and internal coherence, academic writing style, the abstract as well as how to do self-revision. However, the purpose of the workshop is not to provide participants with a recipe or rigid writing 'rules' but rather to provide guidelines about using different writing strategies to effectively convey information, data and arguments.

Outcomes:

  • Develop participants' skills as editors of their own texts
  • Develop partcipants' abilities as critical readers of their own texts
  • Equip participants with practical skills that will increase their publication output.

Requirements: All participants are required to complete the attached questionnaire and either upload it with the online registration form or submit it by close of business, Friday, 4 November 2022. Participants are welcome to bring their own writing to the workshop as there will be plenty of opportunity to work on their own text during the sessions.
