Facilitator: Ms Selene Delport is the Postgraduate Workshop Coordinator at Stellenbosch University’s Writing Lab. Since 2009, Ms Delport has been presenting writing skills workshops for postgraduate students who are writing their theses and dissertations. She has also developed a number of additional workshops for postgraduate students, including courses on research proposals, academic articles, and argumentation.

Target Group: Emerging Researchers, Masters and Doctoral Candidates

Background: The Workshop in Literature Review and Scientific Writing is aimed at postgraduate students and staff writing literature reviews – whether as part of a research proposal, a thesis or as an independent article. Various topics about writing a literature review will be addressed, such as how to read critically, the different types of literature reviews, and ways of organising information in literature reviews. It will also include how to effectively integrate information in a literature review while touching on issues regarding plagiarism, referencing, and developing one’s own academic voice.

Outcomes:

  • Develop participants’ critical reading skills
  • Develop participants’ abilities as critical readers of their own texts
  • Sensitise participants to issues around plagiarism and referencing
  • Equip participants with practical writing skills to develop their own academic voices

This workshop is funded by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) through the University Capacity Development Grant (UCDG)
