Facilitator: Prof Kambidima Wotela studied demography and population studies for all his degrees. He is a recipient of various scholarships and fellowships including the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation fellowship and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation scholarship. He teaches systems thinking, monitoring and evaluation, as well as research and analytical methods at the WITS Graduate School of Governance. One of his current research strands is on approaches to research supervision.

Target Group: Postgraduate students doing their Honours, Masters and Doctoral research studies.

Background: This workshop looks at how to analyse qualitative information. This implies understanding how to carry out an empirical interrogation of a qualitative research strategy and, thereafter, an empirical implementation. The latter will focus on creating ‘theoretical themes’ and then proceeding to fragment the qualitative information that has been collected. This process also creates ‘empirical themes’ that can be equally populated with fragments of the qualitative information. The fragments will then be subjected to thematic content interrogation.

Expected Outcomes: Empirical interrogation as well as empirical application of qualitative information analysis

Requirements: Participants need to have already conceptualised the following aspects of their research:

  • Research title
  • Research problem statement
  • Research purpose (aims and objectives)
  • Research questions and where applicable the accompanying research hypotheses or propositions
  • Collected or in the process of collecting qualitative information.

This workshop is funded by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) through the University Capacity Development Grant (UCDG)
