From Ideation to Academic Legacy

Facilitator: Prof Ruth Albertyn is an NRF-rated scholar with a focus on postgraduate development support. She obtained her M (cum laude) and PhD degrees at Stellenbosch University. After 17 years as a lecturer, she is now a consultant and has presented development workshops on a range of research-related topics at various universities in South, Central Africa and Belgium. She has been appointed extraordinary associate professor and is affiliated with Stellenbosch University’s Business School and the Centre for Higher and Adult Education. Her research interest is in doctoral education, postgraduate supervision and research development and she publishes in this field. She has co-edited three peer reviewed books and examines and supervises students on a master’s and doctoral level. She has been a recipient of awards for teaching, research, and an international award for review.

 

Target Group: Supervisors, students, and early career academics who would like to generate ideas and plan for conducting quality research. It is essential to bring own work for application during this hands-on workshop.

 

Background: Increased accountability pressures in academe result in research education and supervision focusing on timely completion of the research product during postgraduate studies, at times at the expense of quality. There is less focus on mindsets and principles for sustainable development and transferability of skills for further iterations of this research process after graduation. Research development, education and supervision should thus not only focus on the skill development for the qualification but also a passion for the craft and development of lifelong researchers who can continue to contribute to addressing social issues after graduation. In this workshop, we explore the mindsets, principles, and development strategies for application during the iteration from ideation to academic legacy, during formal education, postgraduate supervision and/or independent research.

 

After this workshop the participants should:

• Be aware of the foundational aspects necessary for development during the research journey
• Understand the concept and processes involved during ideation
• Be aware of the strategies and principles for implementing quality research
• Know what is required to successfully disseminate research to contribute to developing an academic legacy
