How it Works and Application Procedure

All new applicants (students, supervisors and researchers) who plan to make use of the free statistical support, are required to demonstrate proficiency in basic quantitative research methodology before having individual consultations with one of the consultants. Once the application has been received and reviewed, an email will be sent out with detailed information of what to prepare, the course structure and how to make use of further USC services. For more information about the course, see our "Courses" page.

Important Dates

The USC services are available from the 1st of February to 30th of November each year. If a student is planning on submitting within a specific year and requires the use of the USC services, the timelines are as follows:

  • For August submission, all prerequisites and data captured must be complete by the end of March within that year.
  • For December submission, all prerequisites and data captured, must be complete by the end of July within that year.

If the demand for the USC service exceeds the capacity due to budget constraints, preference will be given to candidates on a first come first served basis.

Eligibility

Due to limited staff capacity, only the following persons qualify to make use of the USC services. Please make sure that you fall under one of these categories before filling in the application form:

  • Masters and Doctoral candidates registered at Nelson Mandela University.
  • Nelson Mandela University staff registered elsewhere for Masters and Doctoral studies.
  • Nelson Mandela University staff members engaged in non-contract academic research which will produce a publishable article for an accredited journal. If a publishable article is not produced within one year after completion of statistical services for the project, the applicant will be invoiced for the USC services. In the event of a dispute, the relevant Faculty REC Committee will decide whether an article is publishable.
