Facilitator: Mrs Anneret Joubert is a Training Librarian at the Nelson Mandela University South Campus Library. She is a practiced trainer in Library and Information Services and has been working in the library for more than ten years. Throughout her career, Mrs Joubert has been actively involved in various professional associations, library committees and training. She has a passion for sharing knowledge and empowering others in the field of Library and Information Services.

 

Target Group: Postgraduate students, researchers, and staff

 

Background: The training session is designed to equip participants with the skills and strategies needed to conduct effective research using databases and Google Scholar.

 

Outcomes:

  • Introduction to Research Databases: Participants will gain an understanding of research databases, their importance, and the types of information they offer. They will learn how to select appropriate databases based on their research needs.
  • Efficient Search Strategies: Participants will learn effective search strategies to retrieve relevant and targeted results from databases. The session will cover techniques such as Boolean operators, truncation, and phrase searching to enhance search precision.
  • Database Navigation and Features: Participants will explore the features and functionalities of popular research databases. They will learn how to navigate databases efficiently, use advanced search options, and leverage tools like subject headings and filters.
  • Maximizing Google Scholar: Participants will discover how to effectively utilize Google Scholar for research purposes. They will learn how to optimize search queries, use advanced search settings, and access full-text articles through institutional subscriptions.
  • Evaluating and Citing Sources: The session will emphasize the importance of critically evaluating sources for credibility and relevance. Participants will learn how to assess the reliability of information found in databases and Google Scholar. Additionally, they will receive guidance on proper citation practices.
